After all german federal states have introduced early englisch lessons eingeführt haben, doubt has been cast on reason and effect of foreign language lessons in primary school. At present the states are revising their concepts, some even changed their minds, the Süddeutschen Zeitung wrote in a report yesterday. The reasons for concern are various: Too few english lessons per week and lack of qualified teachers. The ones to suffer are the pupils, who remember only a few words. The chairman of the national organisation of philologists, Heinz Peter Meidinger, also complained about the lack of cross-state standards.
The situation is different with bilingual schools, where the language is part of the school culture, and scientists certify the best learning effects. „Again we feel confirmed that our concept of bilingual education offers the best quality concerning languages and therefore leads to optimal learning success“, says Andreas Schraknepper, Head of Kämmer International Bilingual School (KIBS) in Hannover, after yesterdays report. The teachers at KIBS are native or near native speakers and english language is learned situationally with the immersion method. While the states are backpedaling, KIBS has developed a learning opportunities that start early and build up consecutively. With its Kindergarden, primary and secondary school – all bilingual and full-time – KIBS offers a unique learning opportunity in the state capital.
